Created in 1935 and originally titled "Tsukiji Honganji no Yūzuki" (築地本願寺の夕月), this work draws the viewer into a moment of peaceful twilight at the famous Honganji Temple in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo. Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) is celebrated as one of Japan’s most beloved printmakers, helping to revive and transform woodblock printing in the 20th century. Renowned for his poetic landscapes and studies of light, Hasui combined traditional ukiyo-e techniques with a Western-influenced sensitivity to mood and shadow. His influence persists globally among art lovers and collectors, cementing his position as an essential figure in Japanese art history.
"Evening Moon at Honganji Temple in Tsukiji" stands out as a profoundly tranquil work that poetically integrates architectural harmony, moonlit reflections, and the subdued hustle of evening in the city. Set against the striking temple architecture, the waxing moon glows softly overhead, reflected in the temple's still waters and illuminating temple grounds with a cool serenity. This scene conveys both the grandeur and restorative silence of sacred urban spaces—a hallmark of Hasui’s skill in capturing mood.
The use of deep cobalt blue dominates the print, providing a nighttime hush that magnifies the gentle grays and the gold-toned yellow emanating from lanterns, temple windows, and the moon itself. The measured inclusion of warm yellow hues offers a lively counterpoint to the enveloping dusk tones, enriching the composition with a tangible sense of quiet anticipation and poetry. Owning this print adds a moment of contemplative beauty—a window into the elegance and technical mastery that Hasui brought to every scene.
Presented with fine taste and a reverence for Japanese tradition, this museum-quality print is an exceptional gift idea for lovers of art and culture. It brings soothing character to any room and is an inspired present for Christmas, weddings, housewarmings, or special occasions like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, suiting refined tastes and those who cherish atmospheric, contemplative designs.
